Special Collections and Archives at James Branch Cabell Library

Special Collections and Archives at James Branch Cabell Library is home to rare and valuable papers and records tied to 20th and 21st century Richmond and Central Virginia. Our collection focuses on traditionally under-documented groups including the African-American, gay and lesbian and women's activist communities; the visual, literary and performing arts; architecture and urban planning; and civic engagement and social activism.

Special collections of books and other published materials include book art; comic arts; manuscripts; rare books and periodicals; late 19th and early 20th century architecture and decorative arts; and Richmond history, imprints, literature and serial publications from the late 20th century to the present. The historical records of VCU and its Monroe Park Campus predecessor, the Richmond Professional Institute, are found here as well.

Materials from the collections do not circulate but are available for use in our Reading Room, on the fourth floor of Cabell Library. The staff is available to answer questions related to collections and the use of primary source materials.
